Roseau, Dominica: Media toured the geothermal site in Laudat (Dominica) on Monday, April 17, 2023. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit took to Facebook and shared glimpses that showcased the ongoing work on the site.
The Flow testing of the 2nd Production Well of the Geothermal Development Project in Laudat has commenced. The Dominica Geothermal Development Company Ltd (DGDC) wishes to notify residents and road users in the Roseau Valley that its drilling contractor will be transporting heavy equipment from Laudat to the Woodbridge Bay port beginning on Thursday, April 20, 2023, and continuing for approximately three weeks.
Dominica is a leading destination for geothermal exploration in the Eastern Caribbean and the country has taken a step forward in leading a future built on and by renewable energy. It’s not enough that 33% of Dominica’s peak energy consumption comes from renewable sources, their invitation to invest is premised on the promise of 100% clean energy by 2030 and the geothermal project will be key to getting us over the line.
Geothermal development in Dominica has moved to a new stage with the commencement of drilling of the reinjection well on Friday, March 10, 2023. This follows the successful completion of the production well last year.
The reinjection well is an integral part of any geothermal power plant. This well will be drilled to a depth of up to 1500m but may be of a lesser depth depending on what is found as drilling goes along. Drilling is to last upwards
of 28 days.
Earlier, the OECS Geothermal Energy: Capacity Building for Utilisation, Investment, and Local Development (OECS-GEOBUILD) Programme, in collaboration with the Dominica Geothermal Development Company Limited (DGDC), also led a Study Tour in Dominica from April 3 – 5, 2023.
The tour, led by OECS Project Manager, Dr Ernie Stapleton, aimed to analyze and provide specialized advisory support and capacity building for geothermal energy development based on critical needs to strengthen relevant project initiatives in beneficiary countries.
They also sought to identify lessons learned by the Dominica Drilling Team for the implementation of the geothermal exploration and drilling phase and to foster regional cooperation and collaboration within the OECS on geothermal energy.
