Web Desk (24 News): The Indian Hockey Federation (Hockey India) has refused to play against Pakistan in the upcoming Sultan of Johor International Hockey Cup in Malaysia, reports 24 News HD.
According to sources, Hockey India has been following in the footsteps of the devious Indian govt, which looks to ‘isolate’ Pakistan internationally. This is another instance of the politicization of sports that the Indian govt has instigated.
Talking to the media on Tuesday, the Captain of the Pakistan Hockey Team, Abdul Haseem Khan fired away at the overly political attitude of Hockey India. He said that ever since India assumed the Presidency of the Asian Hockey Federation, Pakistan’s participation in international events is being systematically minimized. The Indian lobby is constantly trying to use its position of power to coerce Pakistan and to formulate public opinion regarding it.
This is a blatant abuse of power, said the Pakistani Hockey Captain.
While Pakistan and India continue to share a tense relationship due to the fluctuating nature of ties, the arena of sports needs to remain de-politicized in order to maintain the sanctity of sportsman conduct.
India has been using its influence in other sports as well, including Cricket in order to corner Pakistan by refusing to play matches with it.
It can be argued that Hockey India genuinely feels intimated by Pakistan, and is afraid that in case of a loss to Pakistan it would have to face the wrath its public. Either, nothing can justify its refusal to play a sporting event.
