Tremors were felt across major parts of Pakistan, after an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude jolted nation. The information about the following has been shared by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
Several reports have stated that, the shocks were felt in major parts of Islamabad, Lahore and its adjoining areas, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as well.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, “An earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck at 2:20pm in the Hindu Kush region, Afghanistan at a depth of 213km. it had a longitude of 70.63 East and a latitude of 36.16 North.”
At the same time, the US Geological Survey (USGS), which reports the magnitude using the Moment Magnitude scale, said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.4 while its epicenter was 44km south-southeast of Jurm, Afghanistan.
While sharing the details on the earthquake, chief meteorologist at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Sardar Sarfaraz, said that, “Aftershocks could definitely be expected as was common after major earthquakes.”
He said that, same had also taken place in Japan, which was struck by a powerful earthquake on January 1.
Sharing the information on the condition, the KP Rescue 1122 spokesperson, Bilal Ahmad Faizi, said that, “its control room had not received any distress calls or reports about any loss of lives or the property which has been damaged so far.”
It is to be hereby noted that, during the past week, Quetta and its surrounding areas were jolted by an earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale. The earthquake sent the waves at around 11:10am, forcing the residents to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in open spaces.
As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremors were not only felt in Quetta but also in the surrounding areas. The earthquake’s epicentre was traced back to the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
