St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis- Dr Terrance Drew deployed a task force to address crime and Violence as a public health issue. The Government will take proper steps to curb the crime in the federation.
The task force is included the Prime Minister, Minister of National Security, and Chairperson, Dr Terrance Drew; Dr Izben Williams; and senior management officials from across the Government, including the Ministry of National Security, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Development, and the Prime Minister’s Office.
Dr. Izben Williams is a renowned Consultant Psychiatrist, Founder and President of the Ripple Institute SKN, Professor and Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences & Medical Ethics, and Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development at Windsor University School of Medicine. He also presented his keynote address at the Regional Symposium to address Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue – The Crime Challenge held in April 2023 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The task force will work under the leadership of Dr Williams across the region. Dr Willimas stated that with true knowledge right tools, Violence could be prevented. Violence is now recognized as a public health problem, but just 40 years ago, the words “violence” and “health” were rarely used in the same sentence.
Along with that, the team is also assigned to construct the framework to combat crime in St Kitts and Nevis. Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew said that the ocietal peace and stability are prerequisites for true social and economic development and for the accomplishment of their progressive Sustainable Island State Agenda.
The initiative will work as the backbone for strengthening national security, social development, education, and health. Along with that, the taskforce will also ensure the strengthening of the judicial system by enhancing law enforcement initiatives and reviewing some of our current laws.
