The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday has instructed the inspector general of the Punjab Police (IGP) and the regional police officers (RPOs) for the installation of the Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) at the highly sensitive and sensitive polling stations and set up a control room to keep a check on the activities.
According to the information, the Punjab provincial election commissioner (PEC) has informed the chief secretary of Punjab, the chief commissioner Islamabad, IGP Punjab and IGP Islamabad to strictly comply with the directives issued on December 25, 2023, in the letter and spirit.
The decision for the installation of the CCTV cameras at the sensitive and highly sensitive polling stations was taken during the top level meeting of the ECP with the Chief secretary of Punjab in link with the conduct of by-elections in the 20 provincial constituencies in the month of July, 2022.
Besides, all the regional police officers (RPOs), as well as the district police officers (DPOs), Punjab regional and district election commissioners and other relevant authorities have also been informed on the above mentioned details.
After the directives made by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), RPO Rawalpindi, Syed Khurram Ali made directions to the City Police Officer (CPO), Syed Khalid Hamdani and the DPOs of Attock, Jhelum and Chakwal to take required steps and ensure strict compliance in this connection and with the RPO office.
At the same time, a senior police officer, while mentioning about the categorisation and the number of highly sensitive and ordinary polling stations in Rawalpindi division, said that, “the categorisation of polling stations had not been finalised, however, the process was underway.”
