On Late Monday, a raised segment of the Mexico City Metro collapsed causing a subway car to crash into a busy street. According to officials, 15 people died and almost 70 people were injured.
According to Mayor almost 34 injured people were rescued and hospitalized for further treatment where as all those who are trapped inside train are yet to be rescued. The train was split into two halves and suspended.
This overpass was in southern Mexico and it was about 5 meters above the road. Videos were shot of the situation and uploaded on social media. It showed hundreds of rescuers were digging through the ruins of the collapsing building for a vehicle stuck under the debris.
Mayor said that as soon as the train passed through the beam it collapsed causing this much of destruction and life loss.
It is yet to be confirmed that those who died were inside the train, pedestrian or on their own vehicles passing from the subway.
Hundreds of police officers and firefighters surrounded the scene in Tlahuac’s southern borough, while worried friends and family members of those suspected to be on the trains assembled outside the protection zone.
The tragedy happened in the Line 12, which was recently built on Mexico city’s Subway line. This line stretches to city’s south side. Most of the subways running inside the Mexico city are built underground while those running in the outskirts of the city are built over the elevated planes.
This collapse could cause a major blow on the person who was mayor in the year 2006 to 2012 in which this Line 12 was built. As soon as the Mayor left his post, questions regarding the safety of the Overpass started to raise.
The ex Mayor said that “This is a terrible tragedy and investigations has to be done and those who are responsible for this has to be investigated.”
Mexico being one of the busiest city encountered two such accidents in past half century. Similar cases like crashing of two trains happened in the year 2015 as well as previous year causing injuries to many.
