The Former Chief of the Punjab police Arif Nawaz failed to appear before the commission which is mainly set up to investigate the Tehreek-i-Labbaik sit-in at Faizabad in 2017, for second time, on Tuesday.
It is to be noted that, officials concerned with the case mentioned above said that, three member commission had sent summon to Nawaz along with former Islamabad police chief Sultan Azam Temuri and former Rawalpindi division commissioner Nadeem Aslam Chaudhary.
Notably, former Police chief has mentioned his engagements in the Federal Public Service Commission interviews for not being able to appear before the commission.
The officials further added that, “Temuri and Chaudhary has appeared before the commission at its office in the Interior Ministry on Tuesday and their statements were also recorded.”
Former IGP Temuri told the commission that he was appointed as the police chief on December 8, 2017, while the TLP sit-in started on October 24 and finished on November 27 that year. During that time, e was Gujranwala regional police officer.
He stated that the cases that were registered in link with the sit-in were followed by the police under the directives made by the government, keeping an eye on the agreement with the TLP.
Former IGP Temuri has also made the recommendation on the formation of a dedicated anti-riot force to deal with the sit-ins.
Besides, a contingency plan, SOPs and prior preparation should be done to deal with such demonstrations.
Meanwhile, the commission has also asked about the preparations in place to deal with the sit-in and the actions taken.
As per the officials, Temuri was also asked about the failure to intercept the protesters on their way to Islamabad and those who facilitated the TLP for the sit-in.
After recording statements of the two former officials, the commission adjourned the proceedings till Wednesday when former premier Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is due to appear.
