Lahore (24 News): The Historic Bagh e Jinnah Open Air Theater of Lahore will undergo massive renovations in the upcoming months, reports 24 News HD.
According to sources, the Punjab govt has allocated a substantive amount of money for the renovation and re-decoration of Lahore’s oldest open air theater. The approval came after a series of requests were made to the govt by the Punjab Arts Council to renovate and preserve the theater which is a major part of Lahore’s history.
The Open Air Theater was built in the western courtyard of Bagh e Jinnah in 1942, and was constructed under the supervision of the then Principal of Government College, G. D. Sondhi. Many of the great artists of the sub-continent have delivered captivating performances at the venue.
After Partition, the venue played host to some of the greatest artists, authors, poets and performers of the country as well. With time and criminal negligence the venue started to show signs of deterioration and decay and was left unattended to by subsequent govt’s.
The project entails renovation, expansion, and redecoration of the entire theater complex. The purpose is to restore the prestige of theater as an art form and to encourage social activities in the city.
