Jhelum: While conducting field research in areas near Jhelum, students of Punjab University’s zoology department have discovered 3.5 million years old remains of hippopotamus, reported 24 News.
The researchers discovered the remains in Tarot area of Jhelum. They include teeth of hippopotamus.
Doctor Akhtar of zoology department of Punjab University told that it is called Hexa Proto Don and most of the remains are found in Potohar area. He told that the animal used to have its habitat in Jhelum nearly 3.5 million ago.
He added that there used to be a variety of animals in the area and now with the evolution and passage of time they are extinct.
He said that their team is presently working in Talla Jogiyan area of Jhelum. The oldest remains could be found in Kallar Kahar and Daud Khel area.
He lamented that research on animal remains is only conducted by Punjab University and no other such study is being conducted in the country.
