Islamabad: According to a circular issued by Pakistan Electronic Media and Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) all TV channels have been directed to avoid release of unverified, false and baseless news items keeping in view the journalistic ethics.
It must be noted that TV channels had aired unverified news of death of late cricketer Muhammad Hanif on August 11. It was confirmed later on that Muhammad Hanif had not died when he recuperated and his respiration was restored. PEMRA expressed serious concern over airing of the news of death of the ‘little master’.
A circular issued by the authority added that the mentioned news item caused annoyance for the family of former test cricketer and its relatives while the general public was also misguided. It also stated that such act of the news channels was unacceptable in every civilized society.
PEMRA advised all TV news, current affairs and TV channels to ensure release of verified news items in accordance of code of ethics given by the Supreme Court.
In another incident various TV channels had aired news of Imran Khan’s third marriage on which PTI took a notice of the issue and advised PEMRA to initiate investigation into the matter.
